Most houses we walk into run either a gas furnace on ductwork or zonal electric heat with no ducts at all, and we don't approach those two starting points the same way.

Heat pump and ductless installation for zonal-electric homes

Builders put baseboard and wall heaters in thousands of Bethel, River Road and Thurston houses and left out the duct system entirely. Ductless heat pump systems go into those homes, with indoor heads in the rooms people actually use, and the house gets cooling for the first time. EWEB and SUB both built their rebate programs around this equipment, so a Bethel or Thurston house on baseboard heat is the exact case those programs were written for.

Gas furnace replacement and central air

Postwar and 1970s tract homes in Santa Clara, west Eugene and central Springfield came with a furnace plenum and ductwork we can still use. We replace the furnace and add central heating and air conditioning on that existing duct system, which is the common path to cooling a house that has only ever had heat. Sizing comes off the load calculation, not off the old unit's nameplate.

Heating and cooling repair

A furnace that quits in a January cold snap and an air conditioner that dies in August are the same call from our end: find the fault, explain it, fix it. Gas furnaces, heat pumps, ductless heads, air handlers and cooling-only systems all come through our HVAC diagnostics and repair work. You'll also hear it straight when a repair no longer makes sense on aging equipment.

Ventilation and indoor air quality

Late-summer wildfire smoke returns to Lane County most years, and homeowners ask about filtration more than anything else after a smoky week. Our air ventilation services cover media filter cabinets sized to your airflow, sealed returns, fresh-air intakes, and bath and range exhaust that actually terminates outside. A thick filter crammed into a one-inch slot chokes a blower.

Preventative maintenance and water heater installation

Preventative maintenance catches the weak capacitors, dirty coils, cracked flue connections and low charge that turn into emergencies later. Heating gets checked in fall, cooling in spring. Homeowners call us about a handful of symptoms far more than the rest. You can check a few yourself. The others need a technician with gauges and a meter.

Furnace isn't heating

Start with the simple things. Check that the thermostat is set to heat and the batteries aren't dead, that the furnace switch on the wall is on, and that the filter isn't packed solid. A clogged filter trips the high-limit switch and shuts the burner down. If the blower runs but the air stays cool, or the unit lights and drops out after a minute, the fault sits in the flame sensor, igniter, pressure switch or gas valve. A technician tests those four parts on the call.

AC is blowing warm air

Check the outdoor unit first. If the fan isn't spinning, the breaker may have tripped or the capacitor may have failed. If the fan runs but the air indoors stays warm, the system is low on refrigerant, which means a leak somewhere. Ice on the copper line is a common sign. Shut the system off, let it thaw, and call. A frozen system damages its own compressor.

Weak airflow from the vents

Older houses on both sides of the river produce this complaint more than any other, and the ducts are the reason. Crawlspace runs come apart at the joints, flex duct kinks behind insulation, and furniture blocks returns. A dirty filter or a failing blower motor does it too. Check the filter and open every register first. If airflow is still weak at the far end of the house, the ducts need eyes on them. See duct cleaning or ventilation work.

Uneven heating or cooling between rooms

Bedrooms over a crawlspace run cold while the living room stays warm, or the upstairs of a split-level bakes in August. Long or undersized duct branches, missing crawlspace insulation and closed-off rooms all contribute. In a zonal-electric house, a ductless head in the problem room beats fighting a duct system that was never really there.

Heat pump runs constantly in damp weather

Valley winters sit in the thirties and forties with heavy moisture for weeks, and that range drives the most defrost cycles of the year. A heat pump normally sheds some frost and steam off the outdoor coil. A unit that's iced solid, sitting in standing water, or running backup heat around the clock isn't normal. Check that the pad drains, that no downspout empties onto the coil, and that leaves aren't packed in the fins.

Heating and cooling needs in Eugene and Springfield: local climate and conditions

The valley gives us a long mild heating season and a short sharp cooling season, and a heat pump suits that pattern. Equipment on the valley floor spends most of its run hours in the band where a heat pump works efficiently, and the deep sustained cold that punishes air-source systems elsewhere doesn't hold in Lane County.

Winter poses a moisture problem more than a cold one. Weeks in the thirties with rain and fog push a heat pump through frequent defrost cycles, so the outdoor unit sits on a pad above standing water, meltwater routes away, and downspouts stay off the coil.

Summer changed the conversation. The June 2021 heat dome pushed Eugene to roughly 111 degrees, and plenty of households learned their home had no cooling at all. A bigger machine isn't the answer. Oversized equipment short cycles through the 85 to 92 degree afternoons that make up the real cooling season.

Utility territory in Eugene and Springfield: EWEB and SUB run their own rebates, not Energy Trust

Your own city utility funds the electric rebates on both sides of the river, not Energy Trust of Oregon. The Eugene Water and Electric Board meters Eugene homes, and the Springfield Utility Board meters Springfield homes. Both utilities are consumer-owned, which puts them outside the Energy Trust system that serves investor-owned utilities like PGE and Pacific Power. A Salem homeowner claims a heat pump incentive through Energy Trust; an EWEB or SUB address can't.

Gas splits the answer. NW Natural serves both cities and does participate in Energy Trust, so a gas furnace follows a different program than the electric heat pump beside it. On a furnace replacement with cooling added, the two halves draw from two programs. Confirm current terms with the utility before anyone orders equipment.

Permits for HVAC work in Eugene and Springfield go through three jurisdictions

Permits follow the service address. The City of Eugene Planning and Development Department permits work inside Eugene city limits, Springfield Development and Public Works permits work inside Springfield, and Lane County Land Management permits addresses outside both city limits. What should I do while waiting for a technician during a freeze?

Keep the house tight. Close blinds at night, shut doors to unused rooms, and open cabinets under sinks on exterior walls so pipes stay above freezing. Is the federal tax credit still available for a heat pump?

No. The federal 25C energy efficiency home improvement credit expired on December 31, 2025, so projects placed in service after that date can't claim it. EWEB and SUB now fund the practical incentive route for electric equipment. Confirm current terms with the utility that bills your address before ordering equipment.

Does the October 2026 Oregon heat pump code change affect my existing house?

No. The Oregon Building Codes Division applies that change through the Oregon Residential Specialty Code to new residential construction, not to replacing equipment in a house that already stands. The Oregon Mechanical Specialty Code continues to govern a changeout in an existing Eugene or Springfield home. If you're building new, ask your building department which code edition governs your permit date.

My system uses R-410A. Should I be worried?

Not immediately, but plan ahead. Manufacturers now ship new residential split systems on R-454B and have stopped producing R-410A, so repairs needing refrigerant draw on reclaimed stock that keeps tightening. Your system is still serviceable. A large leak on an older unit just shifts the math toward replacement sooner than it used to.
